Cognizant System Engineer

Be part of the nation’s only repository for the disposal of nuclear waste known as Transuranic (TRU) waste.

Salado Isolation Mining Contractors, managing and operating contractor of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is currently seeking a qualified individual to serve as a Cognizant System Engineer to join our team located in Carlsbad, NM.

The successful candidate will qualify as Technical Staff for WIPP systems as assigned by the Engineering Manager. Provide real-time support to plant modifications to ensure accuracy to design drawings and other Technical Baseline documents. Perform as-built field verifications of selected structures, systems, components, and drawings that depict the actual plant conditions. Become the technical expert in their respective structures, systems, and components, and develop Engineering Change Notices. Become the system expert and maintain system specifications, configuration management, and design documents to ensure compliance with WIPP Documented Safety Analysis and site procedures as appropriate. Candidate will be required to complete training for unescorted and underground access. Must be able to complete Technical Staff qualification in a timely manner upon assigned system responsibilities. This position requires the ability to perform field work in varied conditions, including indoors and outdoors, surface, and underground. May be assigned as a Cognizant Fire Protection Systems Engineer. Reports to the Fire Protection Engineering Manager.

Exempt Grade Level(s) (28-32)

Minimum Requirements: These requirements must be met to be considered for this posting. Uploaded resumes and applications are the means of determination.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Fire Protection, Mechanical, Electrical, or Civil Engineering is required.

Must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

Higher education attainment than listed acceptable per internal level identifiers of accompanying years of experience.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Previous DOE or commercial nuclear facility experience is preferred.
  • P.E. or NICET Level II or Level III in any fire protection discipline is desired.
  • Experience with vehicle fire suppression (special hazards) systems is a plus.
  • Previous WIPP experience is a plus.

Minimum salary $69,444 per year of a larger salary range --the specific salary offered to a candidate will be influenced by a variety of factors, particularly the candidate’s relevant experience and education.
