Field Engineer

Be part of the nation’s only repository for the disposal of nuclear waste known as Transuranic (TRU) waste.

Salado Isolation Mining Contractors, managing and operating contractor of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is currently seeking a qualified individual to serve as a Field Engineer and join our team to support our government customer in Carlsbad, New Mexico.

The successful candidate will manage SIMCO construction oversight of Utility Shaft Project’s construction activities on a daily basis and support the oversight of various service contracts as requested or assigned.

Candidate must be available for shift work and weekend assignments.

Expectations of the position also include but are not limited to the following:

Attend contractor safety briefings and planning meetings along with IPT meetings that support assigned projects. Monitor the technical requirements of the work and resolve technical issues, monitor implementation of the subcontractor’s quality program. Monitor progress in the field and coordinate with Project Controls to ensure the subcontract’s schedule and progress support the project construction schedule. Prepare daily reports and perform quantity verification and invoice review as required. Review and request approvals on contractor safety plans, schedules, and other contract required plans and deliverables. Review and route for approval all contractor submittals. Coordinate requests and needs between SIMCO departments. Assist in scheduling all work through the plan of the day. Must understand technical drawings and contract management. Will be required to complete identified qualifications to hold position.

Must have strong communication skills, the proven ability to form and lead teams of diverse technical backgrounds, clearly documenting project results, and must have a clear understanding of safety requirements that pertain to construction activities. The candidate must be a self-starter, and able to recognize and suspend or stop unsafe acts.

Exempt Grade Levels (30-34)

Minimum Qualifications: These requirements must be met to be considered for this posting. Uploaded resumes and applications are the means of determination.

  • Bachelor’s degree with two (2) years of professional experience, or
  • Associates degree with six (6) years of professional experience, or
  • High School Diploma or Equivalency with ten (10) years of professional experience.
  • Experience must include some managing or providing oversight or construction activities is required.

Must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ten (10) plus years in a construction, safety, or project management area.
  • Previous experience working in a nuclear facility and/or Department of Energy experience.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) or other related industry specific training.
  • Previous Mining experience.

Starting salary $78,719 per year *

*Base salary will be dependent upon candidate's background (i.e. education and experience).
