Underground Electrician

Be part of the nation’s only repository for the disposal of nuclear waste known as Transuranic (TRU) waste.

Salado Isolation Mining Contractors (SIMCO), an LLC of Bechtel, managing and operating contractor of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is currently seeking a qualified individual to serve as an Underground Electrician to join our team located in Carlsbad, NM.

The successful candidate will perform preventive and corrective maintenance on electrical equipment, mobile equipment, and power distribution systems up to 13,800 volts. The candidate will be expected to follow all company procedures, policies, regulations, and standards in a manner that achieves WIPP’s performance goals by maintaining Safety & Procedure Compliance as two of our core values. The candidate is required to attain and maintain the qualifications/training necessary to perform their job scope and conduct frequent inspections of work area to ensure safe working conditions. The candidate must be able to follow written work instructions and promptly report any hazardous or unsafe conditions to management. Perform similar and related duties as assigned. Must be able to pass a Pulmonary Function Test to qualify to wear and work in a respirator. This position is intended to support surface mining and/or underground mining electrical activities.

Physical Requirements:

  • This position requires intermittent standing, sitting, walking, bending, twisting, crawling, kneeling, climbing, and eye-hand/foot-hand-eye coordination. There will be occasional bending, twisting, crawling, climbing, and foot-hand-eye coordination as well as frequent standing, sitting, walking, and eye-hand-coordination.
  • There will be repetitive movements of intermittent fingers, wrist/hand, arm/shoulder, and leg/foot as well as occasional leg/foot. There will be frequent fingers, wrist/hand, arm/shoulder. There will be hand manipulating for both hands, simple grasping, power grasping, pushing, and pulling, and fine manipulation. Job will require reaching at or above shoulder level and use of the feet to operate foot controls.
  • For lift/carry/push/pull requirements it will be intermittent. There will be occasional Sensory: hearing - must be able to hear quiet conversation in both ears, Vision: acuity - near, far, depth, color, full field, and low light, Balance: must maintain without assistance, Touch: pressure, vibration, Smell: chemical odors, smoke, and equipment's odors, and Speech: must be able to articulate verbally. You will also need to be able to use a computer mouse.

This is a USW Bargaining Unit Position

Minimum Requirements: These requirements must be met to be considered for this posting. Uploaded resumes and completed applications are the means of determination.

  • High School Graduate or Equivalency.
  • Five years of relevant electrical experience in a commercial or industrial environment or five years of industrial electrical training/education is required.

Must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Underground and mining electrical experience preferred.

Filled with SIMCO USW membership first, according to CBA, before other candidate considerations.

Pay Rate is $37.74 per hour.
