Waste Handling Technician

Department: WO-WH CH Waste Handling - Crew C

Be part of the nation’s only repository for the disposal of nuclear waste known as Transuranic (TRU) waste.

Salado Isolation Mining Contractors (SIMCO), an LLC of Bechtel, managing and operating contractor of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is currently seeking a qualified individual to serve as a Waste Handling Technician to join our team located in Carlsbad, NM.

The successful candidate will perform diverse waste handling operations and activities. Direct assigned work groups in conduct of routine and specialized waste handling operations. Follow all safety procedures, regulations, and policies. Conduct frequent inspections of work area to assure that safe working conditions are maintained. Promptly report any hazards or unsafe conditions to management. Perform all standard processing operations and activities to receive, handle and emplace nuclear waste in accordance with established written operating procedures. Apply full range of applicable equipment operation knowledge. Maintain established nuclear material accountability records, assuring accuracy of entries. Identify malfunctioning equipment and systems to assure proper and safe operations. Initiate repairs in accordance with plant work control procedures. Recommend changes to operating procedures to improve quality, efficiency, or safety. Assist maintenance employees during conduct of troubleshooting and repair activities, as directed. Assist engineering employees in conduct of equipment modifications. Perform backfill, emplacement and floor/yard activity. This position requires support for any and all shifts. Must be able to qualify, and maintain qualifications, on all Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including Respiratory Protection and associated equipment.

This is a USW Bargaining Unit Position

Minimum Requirements: These requirements must be met to be considered for this posting. Uploaded resumes and completed applications are the means of determination.

  • High school graduate or Equivalency is required.
  • One (1) year of equipment operating experience is required.
  • One (1) year of nuclear or hazardous waste operations or similar prior work experience is required.

Must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

Filled with SIMCO USW membership first, according to CBA, before other candidate considerations.

Pay Rate is $38.94 per hour.
